"Young People who will be confident, connected, contributing, life long learners"
Our vision highlights the importance we place on enabling our learners to feel connected and active contributors to our community, confident in, seeing themselves as lifelong learners who have the skills and support to reach their potential. |
At Ohakune Primary school we are committed to provide high-quality engaging education to foster development of the whole child.
We offer a wide range of opportunities unique to our area and programmes to expose learners to a wide range of sporting, academic and cultural experiences.
Ohakune Primary School is located at the base of Mt Ruapehu, which creates a school with one of the most breathtaking backdrops in New Zealand.
The school is well resourced and prides itself in providing an innovative approach to teaching and learning.
Snowsports is a large part of our Term 3 curriculum with every child learning how to ski or snowboard. As well as this opportunity, the school has a snowsports race team that compete at the North Island Primary School Championships.
Being part of a small community, as a school we pride ourselves in our connection to the community and the iwi.
We invite you to peruse this site to learn more about our school. However, if you would like additional information we invite you to contact us.

Our Values "PRIDE: Participation, Respect, Integrity, Determination, Environment" are the foundation for creating an environment where our learners can feel connected and confident. We embrace the Tuakana Teina philosophy through our House and School-wide Ambassador, House Captains and Mediator opportunities, which alongside our learning programmes, actively nurture our younger learners while simultaneously cultivating a sense of working in teams, taking responsibility, growing leadership and community among our senior learners (Matoiahiko). The PB4L approach guides our behavioural expectations within the school. We have a desire to create a sense of Hauoro in all our learners, ensuring they feel connected and confident.
Room 1 Term 2 Newsletter
Welcome to Term 2. It is a short 9 week Term with lots packed into it. I will attach our class overview for your information. Please be aware that things[events and people] do change.
It has been a smooth transition back into school this week. I am impressed with the way everyone has settled into learning, class routines and expectations.
I have noticed that many learners do require a refresh of pens[blue and red], pencils and rulers. Please make sure these are named. So many look the same!
A major focus this term is instant recall of basic facts as this aspect is limiting some learners to show their understanding and knowledge within Maths. Many learners have made this a term curriculum goal.
There are many ways to learn basic facts and each learner will have a way that works for them. Some learn best with rote learning - saying the tables over and over.
Some from flash cards; some from saying the multiples on their fingers; some by singing their times tables [YouTube has many examples]. We have talked about the ‘inverse operation’ of multiplication and division, so ‘family of facts’ maybe the way for cementing basic facts knowledge.
Today we got underway with Dance. Partners have been established and practice is underway. Both myself and Mrs Clark were impressed with the maturity and skill level of Room 1 students.
On a more long term focus, this years’ Snowsports planning is underway and a notice will be coming home soon. Hunt out last year’s Turoa pass as this will be reloaded for this year. Thank you to Pure Turoa for their continued support of supplying free passes for the season. If you have misplaced or lost your pass, it will cost you $5 for a replacement. Check those jackets and/or pant pockets.
Thank you to everyone for your support for everyone in Room 1. Both myself and Uncle Wayne appreciate your assistance in supporting learning and ourselves so that everyone can thrive and be the best they can be.
If you wish to catch up at anytime, please email me bheffernan@ohakune.school.nz or come and visit the class. You are always welcome.
Kind regards,
Bridget Heffernan.

It is that time of year again where we are organising our snowsports for Term 3.
Your child will be bringing home a notice about snow sports in the next couple of weeks.

If your child has their pass the information can be reloaded on to the old pass at no cost. If your child needs a new pass then your child will be charged a $5 processing fee.
If your child has last years pass then there will be no cost.????
Just a reminder that the free season passes can only be collected via the school and will not be issued early to families.
