We offer a wide range of opportunities unique to our area and programmes to expose learners to a wide range of sporting, academic and cultural experiences.
Ohakune Primary School is located at the base of Mt Ruapehu, which creates a school with one of the most breathtaking backdrops in New Zealand.

The school is well resourced and prides itself in providing an innovative approach to teaching and learning.

Snowsports is a large part of our Term 3 curriculum with every child learning how to ski or snowboard. As well as this opportunity, the school has a snowsports race team that compete at the North Island Primary School Championships.

Being part of a small community, as a school we pride ourselves in our connection to the community and the iwi.

About Us

Our Values

Our Values "PRIDE: Participation, Respect, Integrity, Determination, Environment" are the foundation for creating an environment where our learners can feel connected and confident. We embrace the Tuakana Teina philosophy through our House and School-wide Ambassador, House Captains and Mediator opportunities, which alongside our learning programmes, actively nurture our younger learners while simultaneously cultivating a sense of working in teams, taking responsibility, growing leadership and community among our senior learners (Matoiahiko). The PB4L approach guides our behavioural expectations within the school. We have a desire to create a sense of Hauoro in all our learners, ensuring they feel connected and confident.

TOI Wearable Arts judges selections are in!
27 May 2026

TOI Wearable Arts judges selections are in!

Good evening TOI students and whānau,

The TOI Wearable Arts judges have made their decisions, and wow, what an incredibly difficult task it must have been! The creativity, imagination, and effort shown across all of the entries was absolutely outstanding, and the judges were blown away by the quality of the designs submitted from around the country.

We are especially proud to announce that out of our 15 school submissions, FIVE garments have been selected to be showcased on stage at TOI 2026, an amazing achievement!

A huge congratulations to the following designers and costumes:

✨ Miss Eva Green by Alexis Fredricksen
✨ TIE-d up! by Harper Gunnell
✨ So Squishy by Hetty Stuckey
✨ Chinese Dancing Dragon by Flynn Macleod, Alexander Young, Alexander (Turtle) Kumeroa-Ruri, and Taylor Williamson
✨ Heart of the Earth by Oscar Moody

I will be sending out another form shortly for the parents/caregivers of these students to complete, as further information is required. Please also ensure that the image release form has been completed and signed, as costumes will not be able to participate without this permission.

What an incredible accomplishment for these students and for our school community!

To every student who entered, thank you for throwing yourselves into such a creative and ambitious challenge. TOI is a huge undertaking, and it was inspiring to see so many imaginative ideas brought to life. Even if your garment was not selected for the TOI stage, your hard work and creativity deserve to be celebrated, and we are looking at ways to showcase all of the amazing finished garments within the school.

Congratulations again to everyone involved; we are so proud of you all!

Miss Wilson

Important information for Heke Taumata students
22 May 2026

IMPORTANT NOTICES:

UNIFORM

We have a collection of shoes outside of Heke Taumata, with it so cold in the morning it is important that our learners are coming to school with warm feet and families must be missing these.  At yr 4 and 5 learners need to be able to look after their OWN clothing and shoes.

There is also a collection of UNNAMED jerseys outside the classroom as well.

HEADLICE

It is that time of year where head lice are making their way back into our learners hair, please check your childs hair and if you see any signs please treat immediately if you don't have any access to treatment please ask at the school office.  A reminder that head lice like clean hair just as much as dirty hair, they also enjoy short hair as well as long, please be vigilant with your childs hair.

Thanks

Tash and Amy

Mahi Kainga (Homework Tasks)
19 May 2026

Kia ora whānau,

Hopefully you would have seen a homework task come home with your child recently. As part of our current learning we are focusing on information reports and their key features. Your child has two weeks to complete this task. The aim is for students to become familiar with how information reports are structured and to begin creating their own. They are welcome to present or share their work in a way that suits them which they will do within a small group back at school.

For maths homework, it would be greatly beneficial if your child could practise their multiplication facts. We recommend starting with the 2x, 5x, and 10x tables, and then progressing to 3x, 4x, 6x and beyond. This will support their learning as we continue working on multiplication and division in class.

Your child should have also brought home a spelling list. We are currently learning about the ‘ch’ spelling pattern, which can make different sounds such as:

‘ch’ as in chair
‘sh’ as in machine
‘k’ as in choir
Please do what you can to support your child at home. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at scrotty@ohakune.school.nz.

Ngā mihi nui,

Sean.
