Ohakune Primary School is a learning place where there is an expectation of personal success and well-being. Where the focus is on teaching and learning in an environment that appreciates individual uniqueness.

General Description of School

Ohakune Primary School is a full primary school for Year 0 to 8. A decile 5 school which offers balanced education meeting the needs to ensure that all stakeholders are successful and willing and positive contributors to teh community. The school is a focused learning environment and is the core social centre.

The school has an approximate roll of 285 students. There are now 12 full time teachers, 12 classrooms, digital suite, computer suites off classrooms as well, technology centre for hard and soft materials servicing outlying country schools.

There is a school
dental clinic and speech clinic servicing a cluster of schools in the area.There is a kindergarten adjacent to the school and a Kohanga Reo close by.

 

Ohakune Primary school is proud of our achievements with awards.

We have won the Bronze Heart Beat Award for good food nutrition and are working towards the Silver Award.


The school curriculum places particular emphasis on numeracy, literacy and student health and welfare. Ohakune Primary School is a graduate school for Atol. 

We have school wide professional development based on the needs of the students with Literacy and social skills being the main areas of Professional Development for 2006.
We are implementing a years PD with Cool Schools to assist with behaviour management.

 

Ohakune Primary School will follow the National Educational Guidelines that include the National Education Goals, National Administration Guidelines, and New Zealand Curriculum Framework.

Principles

 

- The school will be responsive to the Maori community.

- All students and staff will have opportunities to understand and respect Tikanga Maori and speak basic Reo

- Opportunities will be available for students to be taught in Te Reo

- The school will have high expectations for Maori student achievement and monitor their progress.
